Is Sports Betting Legal in Florida?

Sports betting is illegal in Florida at this moment in time despite the DC Court of Appeals overturning a District Court decision to disallow sports betting in the state. As various courts and state bodies wrangle over the future of legal sportsbooks in the state, Florida residents are left in limbo. However, that isn’t to say that they are unable to bet at all.

Florida bettors can make use of our list of the best offshore sports betting sites, which exist in something of a legal grey area but are generally considered safe. You can easily sign up to one of these platforms, and to date, no one has found themselves in any trouble for using these sites to place bets.

Florida’s Sports Betting Timeline

The sports betting timeline in Florida has been a bit rocky over the years, with multiple efforts made to try and legalize online sports betting. They haven’t yet officially legalized sports betting, and it would appear that there is still a long road ahead. Here are what the bills have looked like over the years.

Previous Betting Bills in FL

March 2020: The legislative session of 2020 concluded without enacting a new law for sports wagering. Although discussions between lawmakers and the Seminole Tribe began just ten days before the session’s end, no agreement was reached. One of the bills that was proposed but failed to pass was SB 968, which would have authorized sports betting at pari-mutuel facilities and tribal casinos, with a tax rate of 15% on gross revenue.

April 2021: An agreement is finally reached with the Seminole Tribe. Governor DeSantis reveals the specifics of the highly anticipated accord between the state and the tribe. This agreement plays a crucial role in laying the groundwork for the legalization of sports wagering.

May 2021: The draft of the sports betting bill is introduced just ahead of the start of a special session in the Senate scheduled for May 17. The Florida Senate voted overwhelmingly (38-1) to approve the agreement between the state government and the Seminole Tribe on May 18. The very next day, on May 19, the Florida House of Representatives also approved the sports betting agreement. This legislative action paved the way for the integration of the provisions outlined in the Gaming Compact established with the Seminole Tribe.

June 2021: DraftKings and FanDuel collaborate to form the Florida Education Champions coalition, with the primary objective of gathering the necessary signatures for their initiative to legalize sports betting. They aim to have this initiative included on the 2022 ballot for Florida voters to decide.

May 2021: Governor DeSantis signs the Compact, a document approved by the Florida legislature that promises the state a minimum of $2.5 billion in revenue over five years. The Compact’s approval is rapidly followed by the endorsement of the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate.

January 2022: Initiative #21-13 for sports betting, backed by FanDuel and DraftKings, fails to garner enough signatures to appear on the November 2022 ballot. Consequently, the timeline for legalization is delayed until at least 2024.

The Future of Betting on Sports in Florida

The future of sports betting in Florida is still up in the air as things stand. There is a decent swell of support to legalize sports betting, but it seems that a bill may only be entertained sometime in 2024 and it is no guarantee that it will pass.

Is Horse Racing Wagering Legal in FL?

Yes, horse racing wagering is legal in Florida. The state has a long history of horse racing, and various forms of horse racing betting are allowed. Plus, Florida has several horse racing tracks where you can place bets on horse races, both in person and through off-track betting locations or online platforms that are licensed to operate within the state.

Horse racing betting falls under a different legal framework compared to other forms of sports betting. Many states have specific regulations and authorities governing horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering. In Florida, the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering is responsible for regulating horse racing and related betting activities.

Can I Bet on Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) in Florida?

The legal status of daily fantasy sports (DFS) in Florida is a bit complicated. While some DFS operators continue to offer their services in the state, the legal situation is not entirely clear-cut due to ongoing debates and legal challenges.

In 2018, a bill was signed into law in Florida that included provisions related to daily fantasy sports, legalizing and regulating DFS contests. This law required DFS operators to obtain a license from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation to operate in the state. However, legal challenges and disagreements continue to arise, and the DFS landscape in Florida remains somewhat uncertain.

Land-Based Betting Options in Florida

There may not be any land-based or online sports betting options in Florida, but you can find some other land-based gambling options in the state right now.

Horse Racing Tracks: Florida has a number of horse racing tracks where you can watch live horse racing and place bets on the races. Some well-known tracks include Gulfstream Park, Tampa Bay Downs, and Calder Casino.

Casinos: Florida has a mix of Native American tribal casinos and pari-mutuel casinos that offer a range of gambling options, including slot machines, table games, and poker. One of the most famous is the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

Pari-Mutuel Betting Facilities: In addition to horse racing tracks, there are pari-mutuel betting facilities that offer betting on various other events, such as greyhound racing and jai alai.

Card Rooms: Many of the state’s pari-mutuel facilities also operate card rooms that offer poker games.

Cruise Ship Casinos: Some cruise ships that depart from Florida ports offer onboard casinos where passengers can gamble while at sea.

Bingo Halls: Bingo is a popular form of gambling in Florida, and there are numerous bingo halls across the state.

Lottery: Florida has a state-run lottery that offers various games, including scratch-off tickets and draw games like Powerball and Mega Millions.

Neighboring States to Florida with Legalized Betting

While Florida may not be the most inclusive place for online sports betting at the moment, some of its neighboring states have made strides in legalizing sports betting themselves. Here is what the current situation looks like for sports betting in other states surrounding Florida.

Georgia: While Georgia does not have full-scale casino gambling, it has allowed for a state lottery and limited forms of charitable gambling.

Alabama: Alabama has a state-run lottery and permits pari-mutuel betting on greyhound and horse racing. However, casinos and commercial gambling are generally restricted.

Mississippi: Mississippi offers a variety of legal gambling options, including casinos, sports betting, and charitable gambling.

Louisiana: Louisiana has a strong gambling presence with riverboat casinos, land-based casinos, Louisiana online casino options, horse racing tracks, and a state lottery.

South Carolina: South Carolina has strict gambling laws, and most forms of gambling are prohibited. The state has no casinos and limited betting options.

North Carolina: North Carolina has a state lottery, allows charitable gambling, and has permitted tribal casinos to offer various forms of gambling.

Tennessee: Tennessee has legalized online sports betting and also has a state-run online lottery. Other forms of gambling are generally restricted.

How to Bet Safely and Securely in Florida

In order to ensure that you can bet on sports safely, you need to bet with sites that you can trust. You can trust the sites on our list, but for future reference, if you stumble onto sites that aren’t on our list, here is how you can make sure you have a safe betting experience.

Choose Licensed and Regulated Sportsbooks: Stick to online sportsbooks that are licensed and regulated by the appropriate authorities.

Research Sportsbooks: Before signing up with a sportsbook, do your research. Read reviews, check user experiences, and verify the sportsbook’s reputation. Avoid unlicensed or unregulated operators, as they might not provide the same level of security and fairness.

Check for SSL Encryption: Ensure that the sportsbook’s website and mobile app use secure socket layer (SSL) encryption to protect your personal and financial information. Look for “https://” in the website’s URL and a padlock symbol in the address bar.

Responsible Gambling: Set a budget for gambling and stick to it. Only bet with money you can afford to lose. Avoid chasing losses and know when to take a break if your gambling becomes too intense.

Age Verification: Verify that you meet the legal gambling age in Florida, which is typically 21 for sports betting. Legitimate sportsbooks will require age verification before allowing you to register and place bets.

Two-Factor Authentication: Whenever possible, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your sportsbook account. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a secondary verification method in addition to your password.

Use Strong Passwords: Create strong and unique passwords for your sportsbook accounts. Avoid using easily guessable passwords, and consider using a password manager to keep track of them.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi: When placing bets or accessing your sportsbook account, avoid using public Wi-Fi networks, as they can be less secure. Use a secure and private internet connection.

Bonuses and Promotions at Florida Sportsbooks

Cashing in on a few generous bonuses and promos when you sign up to the best Florida betting sites can be a really exciting prospect. These offers can vary, but they will typically follow a standard trend. Here are the types of promotions that you can claim with the best Florida betting sites:

Welcome Bonuses: These are often given to new customers when they sign up and make their first deposit. Welcome bonuses can come in the form of free bets, deposit matches, or risk-free bets.

Deposit Matches: Sportsbooks may match a certain percentage of your initial deposit up to a specified amount. For example, if they offer a 100% deposit match up to $500, depositing $500 would give you an additional $500 in bonus funds.

Free Bets: Some sportsbooks offer free bets either as part of a welcome bonus or as ongoing promotions. With a free bet, you can place a wager without using your own money, and you keep the winnings if the bet is successful.

Risk-Free Bets: This promotion refunds your stake up to a certain amount if your first bet on the site loses. If your bet wins, you keep the winnings, and if it loses, you get your stake back as a free bet.

Reload Bonuses: These are similar to welcome bonuses but are offered to existing customers when they make additional deposits. Reload bonuses might not be as large as welcome bonuses, but they still provide extra betting funds.

Odds Boosts: Some sportsbooks offer enhanced odds on specific bets, giving you a chance to earn more on successful wagers.

Cashback Offers: With cashback promotions, you might receive a percentage of your losses back as bonus funds.

Refer-a-Friend Bonuses: If you refer a friend to the sportsbook and they sign up and make a deposit, you might receive a bonus.

Deposit Methods at Florida Betting Sites

The best Florida betting sites give you plenty of deposit and withdrawal options to choose from. Here’s what you can find with these sites, although keep in mind that it will vary from site to site:

Credit/Debit Cards: Using credit or debit cards like Visa, Mastercard, or American Express is a straightforward and widely accepted way to fund your betting account. Transactions are usually processed instantly, allowing you to start betting immediately. However, keep in mind that some banks might block gambling-related transactions, so it’s a good idea to check with your bank beforehand.

E-wallets: E-wallets like PayPal, Neteller, and Skrill offer a secure and convenient way to make deposits. You can link your e-wallet account to your sportsbook and transfer funds seamlessly. E-wallets also provide an extra layer of privacy, as your financial details are not directly shared with the sportsbook.

Bank Transfers: Bank transfers, including ACH transfers and online banking payments, allow you to link your bank account directly to your sportsbook account. While these transfers might take a bit longer to process compared to other methods, they are generally secure and don’t require sharing card details.

Prepaid Cards: Some sportsbooks offer their own prepaid cards that you can load with funds and then use for deposits. These cards can help you set a betting budget and ensure you’re not overspending.

PayNearMe: PayNearMe lets you make a cash deposit at participating retail locations. You generate a barcode on the sportsbook’s website, take it to the store, and pay with cash. The funds are then credited to your online account.

Cryptocurrency: Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum are becoming increasingly popular for online gambling. They offer enhanced privacy, faster transactions, and sometimes lower fees compared to traditional methods. However, using cryptocurrency might require you to have some familiarity with digital wallets and crypto exchanges.

Wire Transfers: Wire transfers involve sending money directly from your bank account to the sportsbook’s bank account. While this method is reliable, it can have longer processing times and potentially higher fees compared to other options.

Mobile Payment Apps: Some sportsbooks accept payments from mobile payment apps like Apple Pay or Google Pay. These apps allow you to link your credit or debit card and make secure deposits with just a few taps on your smartphone.

Mobile Betting Apps in FL

There are no mobile betting apps in Florida at the moment, as no legal online sports betting is allowed. With that said, you can use the mobile version of the sportsbooks in our list. All of them have optimized their sites, which means that you can easily bet on all your favorite sports with your mobile devices by simply using your mobile browsers.

Live Betting & Streaming at Florida Sportsbooks

When you use Florida online betting sites, you can almost always find live betting features, but many sites seem to nail this feature better than others. On the other side, you won’t always find a live streaming feature with Florida betting sportsbooks, but it’s always a welcome addition.

Live Betting

Live betting allows you to place bets on a game or match that is already in progress. This dynamic feature opens up a whole new realm of betting opportunities, as odds and betting options can change rapidly based on the unfolding action. You can bet on various outcomes during the course of the game, such as the next team to score, the player to score the next goal, or the next person to commit a foul.

Live betting is particularly popular for fast-paced sports like football, basketball, and soccer. It adds an interactive element to your betting experience, allowing you to react to the game as it evolves and make informed decisions based on the current situation.

Live Streaming

Live streaming complements live betting by allowing you to watch the games you’re betting on in real-time. Many sportsbooks offer live streaming of games, matches, and events directly on their platforms. This means you can follow the action as it happens, which is especially valuable for bettors who want to make well-informed decisions based on the game’s progress.

Live streaming is an excellent way to stay engaged with the sports you’re betting on, even if you can’t watch the game on traditional television channels. It’s also a great tool for bettors who want to gauge the flow of the game before placing live bets.

Together, live betting and streaming create a dynamic and immersive betting experience. They allow you to be actively involved in the game, make bets in real-time, and watch the results unfold before your eyes. Keep in mind that not all sportsbooks offer live streaming for every game, and the availability of these features can vary based on the sportsbook’s partnerships and agreements.
