A permanent labor certification issued by the Department of Labor (DOL) allows employers to hire foreign workers on a permanent basis in the United States. In her response, Alcorn provides a comprehensive overview of the amended PERM process, detailing how it affects explicitly tech startups and the steps they need to follow for successful applications. General Requirements for Employers

There are general requirements for employers to follow in the PERM process:
1. Obtain a prevailing wage determination from the DOL.
2. Test the labor market by advertising the job and recruiting U.S. workers.
3. Document and evaluate the responses received from potential candidates during the recruitment process, ensuring a fair and transparent selection procedure.
4. Complete and submit ETA Form 9089, which provides information about the job duties, requirements, offered wage, and the employer’s recruitment efforts, to the DOL for review and approval.
5. Submit a labor certification application (ETA Form 9089) to the DOL.
6. After receiving approval, the employer must file a Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker, with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
7. Upon approval of Form I-140, the foreign worker can proceed with submitting their application for an adjustment of status (Form I-485) or consular processing.
8. It is crucial to accurately complete these forms and provide all required documents to prevent delays or complications in obtaining permanent residency for the foreign worker.

Tech giant Intel announced on Wednesday (Jan 3) the launch of Articul8, a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) software company focused on enterprise customers.

Spun out from Intel’s own research and development efforts, Articul8 received backing from investment firm DigitalBridge and other investors in a bid to commercialize AI technology tailored for business settings, the company announced.

What does Articul8 AI do?

Intel worked with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to create an AI system prototype that can read text and images. The system uses Intel hardware and open-source and proprietary AI models. It runs securely inside business data centers. After customizing the system for BCG over the past year, developers adapted it for other enterprise customers across industries like finance, aerospace, and telecom.

The new firm promises an AI product “built from the ground up” for enterprise, optimized for fast deployment, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness. The system keeps customer data, model training, and inferences within existing security perimeters. Articul8 supports cloud, on-premises, or hybrid AI deployments.

The microprocessor maker and Articul8 will continue working closely together under a strategic partnership, with plans to utilize Articul8’s platform internally and also sell it jointly to customers. The spinout represents Intel’s latest move to seek outside investment and partnerships for tech initiatives as it pushes into software and services to boost the appeal of its hardware.

Former Intel VP and GM Arun Subramaniyan will lead Articul8 as its inaugural CEO. The launch aligns with CEO Pat Gelsinger’s plans to deliver advanced AI offerings that can compete with rivals like Nvidia, making Intel silicon more enticing across verticals.

“Articul8 is well positioned to deliver tangible business outcomes for Intel and our broader ecosystem of customers and partners. As Intel accelerates AI everywhere, we look forward to our continued collaboration with Articul8,” said Gelsinger.

Intel is one of many Silicon Valley companies making inroads in the AI space. They have already developed specialized AI hardware like its Neural Network Processor (NNP) chips and its Habana labs division focuses specifically on machine learning chips.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has spoken on plans for profit amid the potential of an IPO in 2024 and the onset of the AI era as the company seeks to consolidate from a position of strength.

In a wide-ranging interview by Fast Company, Huffman elaborated on other issues such as moderator revolt,  the quality of Reddit’s engaged online communities and product priorities.

“People are trying to start businesses on Reddit, but it wasn’t built for that,” said Huffman, “So just trying to flesh out that ecosystem, I think that’ll be very powerful.”

Reddit is a US-based mega-website combining elements of social media, messageboards and news aggregation. It was founded in June 2005 by Huffman and Alexis Ohanian who sold the platform to Condé Nast the following year. After leaving in 2009, Huffman later returned as CEO in 2015.

Reddit rings the changes

As we approach the new year, noise is increasing that Reddit may be ready to go public and is considering a valuation as high as $15 billion. Such a figure for a company that isn’t profitable reflects Reddit’s massive user base of approximately 400 million accounts. Nevertheless, IPO or no IPO, the co-founder acknowledges the need for returns

Back in April, Reddit announced it would commence charges for heavy users of its API (application programming interface) which is the deluge of data from its 100,000 communities (or ‘subreddits’).

The Reddit community had expressed fears Big Tech giants such as Google and OpenAI were using Reddit’s scale and depth of detailed info on a vast array of subjects to mine the knowledge for the benefit of its chatbots, all at its own expense.

Other users pushed back and later, Reddit moderators revolted over changes, shutting down thousands of Subreddits in protest. Although this disruption was significant, it did not lead to a U-turn in the strategy at the top of the company.

Steve Huffman reflected on the path taken over the changes, stating “I think a lot of how we worked our way through it could have been better.”

AI will play a role in Reddit’s future with the company getting to grips with a prototype “post guidance” feature but its core strength will remain unchanged. As shown in the dispute over internal changes and the moderator rebellion, that lies in its people and communities. This is very much a man-made machine.

Entrepreneur, insurance expert, and community leader Kimberly McMorris knows how it feels to be silenced and powerless. At the age of 12, she was molested by her stepfather’s brother and witnessed her favorite aunt’s life being taken by her uncle. Those were just two of many experiences that created a history of trauma that took her decades to overcome.

However, now that she has managed to overcome her trials, her mission is to help other women use their pain as fuel to propel them to the lives they desire. One way she plans to do that is through her upcoming autobiography, Shadows & Sunshine, set for release in December.

“My purpose is really to empower women,” McMorris said. “When I think of where I am right now compared to where I used to be, it is night and day. I was a broken person, but I have finally found my voice and my purpose, and I want to help other women to pick up the pieces and step into theirs.”

Finding herself meant enduring childhood sexual and domestic abuse, narrowly escaping the drug game, and ultimately getting on the long road to recovery after joining the military and getting therapy. Much of this is covered in her book, and she also shares her journey and lessons during speaking engagements at conferences and women’s events.

From Trauma to Freedom

“The best thing I ever could have done was go and get some therapy. It freed me because I had to forgive myself and then I had to forgive others,” she said. “I had to realize this world owes me nothing. There are so many individuals who are holding onto past issues and trauma, whether it is mommy and daddy issues, or relationship issues. This is holding them back personally and professionally. We have to learn to move on and empower ourselves to make our futures better than our past.”

A key moment for McMorris was when she learned that two of her nieces had been molested. Dealing with that news reminded her of the pain and trauma she endured as a young girl. Yet, she realized that in order for her nieces to overcome their trauma, she had to be strong and walk them through it. She eventually took custody of them.

In the last few years, McMorris has become a recognized figure in the city of Atlanta due to her tenacity, service, and volunteerism. She is the co-owner and COO of First Priority Insurance with her husband, in addition to working as a strategic impact consultant for various community organizations and leaders. A master connector, she is frequently spotted at social and networking functions or planning and facilitating business events addressing economic development, education, and empowerment with high-powered local, national, and international leaders.

Attacking the wealth gap and improving mental health is of key importance to McMorris. Also, promoting collaboration and the flow of business between Black America and Africa. She ran initiatives through Black Wall Street USA and is currently the Director of Public Affairs for the Conference of Black Mayors. McMorris has taken several trips to Africa to build relationships with numerous organizations and is planning to host a delegation from Cameroon in Atlanta, among other things.

The caliber of her work and her position as a real difference-maker is something she never could have imagined ten years ago. She understands that everything she experienced in her past is the reason she now possesses the ability to navigate chaos and function in high-pressure situations.

“I believe in making an impact in peoples lives by building bridges, not just in business, but in family as well,” she said. “In order to accomplish that, I had to set myself free. I had to discover my strength. Because I have, I can help the broke and the broken – especially women, to discover theirs and find success and purpose.”

Although there is no universal list of questions to understand the needs of users better, there are specific points that we would advise you to consider.

This article is based on the Nektony software development company’s experience developing Mac cleanup applications. In this article, we will tell you how we selected users for in-depth interviews and analysis of our applications and what we changed in our products thanks to the data we received.

A common mistake when analyzing users

In the past, when we made some changes to products, we often relied on our own subjective opinions of what would be better for the users. However, product usage scenarios among company employees can be very different from the usage scenarios of real users. When you work with a product for a long time and know all its options and capabilities perfectly, you look at the interface, usability, etc., differently. Therefore, firstly, it is necessary to study the pain points of customers and ask them about possible changes in the product.

How to choose interviewees

At the beginning of the product analysis of Nektony apps, we showed the products to everyone we knew, friends and colleagues from other companies, and asked them what they thought about the apps. But, as I noted above, this is not the right approach. Later, we started working only with real users who once contacted our technical support service.

Among the letters in support, you can find many users who may be loyal to the company.

  • First, it’s not cold contacts we’re reaching out to. We already communicated successfully with them; they contacted us, and we solved their problems; that is, they remained satisfied customers.
  • Secondly, people who write to technical support to solve a question (rather than go, for example, to some forum and complain) – usually this is a special category of people who are ready to share their thoughts, spend their time to make the product better for own use in the future. So, such people willingly agree to become interviewees.
  • Third, these are real users, not hypothetical ones. Interviews with such users provide more accurate data on what exactly they like and what they don’t like, which options are used more often, and which are not clear.

Stage 1: Gathering contacts to whom we will write about the interview

We sell our apps through the App Store and our website worldwide. However, we did not select respondents by country. The main criterion for collecting respondents is the level of their loyalty to the company, which characterizes the level of their willingness to agree to an interview. In our case, the support service always adds the client’s loyalty tag after communicating with him when solving issues. So, downloading a list of such contacts was not a problem.

Stage 2: Sending letters and preparing for the interview

We prepared a letter asking you to agree to an interview and help us make our product better. We sent these letters individually, not through a mailing service, because personalization is important. In general, we experimented with the content of the letter. We changed it depending on the history of interaction with the person, as well as on the results of responses to my previous letters to other people.

You can immediately offer a bonus to the user for the time spent, for example, another app as a gift or a discount on the next purchase. But my personal opinion is that it is better to give a gift to the user after the interview as a pleasant bonus. From experience, those people who agree to provide an interview, not for a bonus, are usually more interested in the results of the interview. They are certainly more loyal and open — more willing to talk about the pros and cons of the application for them personally, etc.

Before starting the meeting with the respondent, it is vital to prepare a script. It can change a little depending on the person. The respondent should be relaxed, and the entire conversation should be in a friendly atmosphere.

Stage 3: The interview

Approaching the interview itself — The primary goal and all our questions to respondents consist of understanding the following:

  • Who is a user of the application?
  • How will users be divided by types? (Like scenarios of behavior, depending on age, type of activity, interests, etc.)
  • How exactly do people use our apps? (launch frequency, most favorite options, why they chose our product, etc.)
  • What is the product’s most significant value to users?

Now, we will briefly talk about the scenario of communication with the respondent according to the pre-prepared script. It is also important that you open a document or have a paper where you will take notes.

  • Introduction: greetings, remembering to say thanks for their time, and asking some short questions of the person to collect information about the country of residence, type of activity, age, etc. Of course, you don’t need to ask directly about all this; for example, you can mark the approximate age of a person (understand visually), or if they tell you how they spent the weekend with their family — you know their family status and lifestyle. At this stage, I also asked how long the person has been using a Mac because, in our case, it is very important. The person’s user habits may depend on this.
  • Permission to record a video. Of course, we were making notes, but the video recordings allowed me to go back to the interview, study it more deeply, and make a transcript of the conversation.
  • Studying the application usage scenario. We asked the person to run our app and use it in their normal mode without my comments. In the process, you can ask the person questions — but ensure that you do not distract them from the usual actions in the program.
  • Question. After observing the user’s actions, we asked them additional questions: open and closed questions. Here are some sample questions:

Open questions:

  1. How did you find Nektony programs, and why did you choose them?
  2. When was the last time you used MacCleaner Pro, and what functionality did you use?
  3. Which option was difficult for you to understand and why?

Closed questions:

  1. Was this or that functionality in the program useful for you?
  2. Would you like us to change the app’s interface?
  3. Is it possible to get back to you after some time for a re-interview?

To sum up. At this stage of the interview, you can ask the interviewees if they have any questions for you. Listen! And give a bonus gift as a thank you to them for their time.

Unexpected results from interviews

Many of the user responses came as a complete surprise to me and the entire team as a whole. Things we never paid attention to and thought that users didn’t need at all turned out to be a significant part of their interaction with applications:

  • Sound effects. People like it when apps have sound effects when they launch or press buttons. It wasn’t important to anyone on our team, so we didn’t even think about it before.
  • Welcome window and results. People like the animations when the program starts and also after some action, such as cleaning the disk. People wanted to see a window with congratulations on their successful results (to show the completion was done correctly). On the contrary, we always tried to simplify the program and get rid of unnecessary windows and user clicks.
  • Texts. People don’t like to read. Previously, we tried to always add an explanatory text to one or another option so that the user could familiarize himself and be sure of his actions when cleaning the Mac. So, we shortened all these texts and left only the mandatory ones. It is important to make the names and icons of each option clear so that everything is intuitive without text. At the interview — it turned out that not all option icons were understandable to users.
  • Expectations. The user sometimes expects something completely different from the program or a certain option. Before adding any new features, it is better to conduct interviews and test your hypotheses. Our company keeps a list of all wishes from users. Before adding a new feature, we first analyze this letter, sort by the number of requests, see how many people are looking for such a feature, and only after that make a decision about the need to add a new feature.

Stage 4: First prototypes and repeat interviews

It is important that after analyzing the necessary changes in the programs, prototypes should be made and re-shown to users. As we said above, sometimes you may encounter unreasonable user expectations. Here are my next steps before finalizing product changes:

  • Preparation of prototypes. There can be many prototypes. In my case, I made more than 20 prototypes until we chose the most convenient version of the interface.
  • Demonstrating the prototype to users. This stage is a repetition of all our previous steps, where we observe precisely how the users use the application at the first launch, how much everything is clear to them, which options they saw at first, and which they overlooked. It happened when the users used the options — they chose differently than we intended. Then, we redesigned the product.
  • Final decision-making. When we finally find an option that is understandable to users, we can hand over the task to the designer and the entire development team. That team then works on the changes in the programs.

Examples of changes based on interview results

Using examples of the interface of some of our programs, we wanted to show what changes occurred in them, thanks to the analysis of user needs through interviews. This process must not only be about UX design but also must consider rethinking some options and the need to show these options to users.

App Cleaner & Uninstaller

Previously, at the first launch, the user saw the information about the number of programs on their Mac, the number of service files, and extensions. We found that this information scares many non-geek users who do not understand what service files are used for. We also added the Expert Mode Option, and only in this mode can the users see the list of service files that will be deleted when uninstalling programs. The average user does not want to see these files; they only want to click on one “magic” button — and for the program to solve their problem immediately.

Duplicate File Finder

During the interview, it became clear that each user has their own goals when using the application. Some users want to find only duplicate photos in the Photo Library; others run the program to merge their folders with duplicates. We always guide them according to the scenario of searching for all duplicates they are comfortable with.

Previously, they had to take extra steps to reach their goal. So we completely changed the first window and added different functions to it — immediately — according to groups of user needs.

During the interviews, it became clear that people are more familiar with and understand when the application interface is similar to the interface of system programs on macOS. For example, people find it easier to click on folders and explore their contents, as they are used to doing in the Finder, rather than clicking on a chart. So we’ve added a Folder Outline file view as done in the Finder.

It is important for users to see animations, beautiful pictures — and a minimum of text. Thanks to the fact that we took all this into account in the new design (after the interviews), we managed to make the application more understandable for the user and increase purchase conversions after downloading the trial version.

I recommend transcribing each individual interview and then using the Value Proposition Canvas to identify user values and needs. This topic needs a separate article, but you can google it and find a lot of information about this process. Take the time to do the following for the best success.

  • Exchange experiences with other product managers and show them the product. Yes, these managers are not your users, but sometimes they can give you valuable advice, depending on their experience.
  • The user likes to be led by the hand and told what to do next after each step.
  • Make the command names and icons as straightforward and clear as possible to be immediately understandable without additional text.
  • Combining functionality and showing extras, like additional options where the user does not expect to see them, is a bad idea.
  • Bring the main functionality of the program to the start window (as shown above in the Duplicate File Finder example).
  • Be very careful with letters to technical support. It is a storehouse of information from where you can get a lot of insights into what is important to users. Fast and good technical support is the loyalty of your users and the opportunity to further interact with them for the development of your company.

A new open-source artificial intelligence model named Obsidian, announced in an Oct. 30 Reddit post, represents a breakthrough in multimodal AI accessibility. Obsidian is the first 3b parameter multimodal AI — which makes it a model compact enough to run efficiently on a regular laptop.

Multimodal AI refers to AI systems that can process and connect data from different modes, such as text, images, audio, and video — in this case, the model accepts text and pictures as input, much like the latest version of OpenAI’s GPT-4V. While multimodal AI models like DALL-E 3 and GPT-4 have shown impressive capabilities, their enormous size makes them resource-intensive to run, requiring expensive high-end hardware — and their models are a closely guarded secret, so you could never run them even if you had the necessary specialized hardware.

The AI intelligence model, Obsidian, packs multimodal intelligence into a standard laptop’s memory

Obsidian changes this by packing multimodal intelligence into a model small enough to fit into a standard laptop’s memory and run at practical speeds. At 3 billion parameters, Obsidian builds upon the Capybara-3B model architecture, which achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to similarly sized models. The developer also announced on Reddit that a multimodal model based on the highly-praised Mistral open-source 7B model will soon follow.

Obsidian’s compact size is thanks to techniques adapted from the LLaMA model architecture. According to the Reddit post announcing Obsidian, it was pre-trained on a diverse synthesized multi-modal dataset, including text paired with corresponding images. This training methodology allowed it to develop strong language and vision capabilities despite its reduced parameters.

The result is an AI assistant with conversational skills and visual understanding that can fit in your backpack. Obsidian breaks down barriers to accessing AI, opening up new possibilities for on-device intelligence.

Irish startup Silicate is preparing to launch the initial trial of its advanced weathering technology to permanently eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and store it in the world’s oceans for tens of thousands of years. The trial is set to occur near Chicago, US, with 500 tonnes of crushed waste concrete to be scattered over 50 hectares of agricultural land. Over one year, the ground concrete will disintegrate in the soil, activating an enhanced weathering process. During this process, the concrete will react with CO2 and turn it into carbonates, regarded as long-term storage solutions for CO2 emissions. By storing the carbon dioxide in this manner, Silicate aims to mitigate the environmental impact of greenhouse gasses and contribute to fighting climate change.

Residency requirements are less strict than they used to be, though you will need to submit a valid passport, proof of health insurance, and proof of income. You also will need to pass a criminal background check.

Healthcare in Portugal is accessible, although there is a downside. EU residents get access to free healthcare immediately, but Americans must live in the country for five years and become permanent residents beforehand. However, you can purchase health insurance in Portugal, and it’s significantly less expensive than U.S. health insurance.

Portuguese culture is laid-back, and the country as a whole has a deep appreciation for music and the arts. It’s also a mecca of winemaking. Many of its citizens’ cultural values center around the importance of family.

Costa Rica

Retiring to a tropical paradise is a dream for many, and you can achieve that dream in Costa Rica. However, becoming a permanent resident can be difficult.

There are three different programs you can take advantage of when applying. The Pensionado visa is designed for retirees with at least $1,000 in monthly retirement income. The Rentista visa is an option with less strict income requirements.

And if you have the capital to invest in Costa Rican infrastructure, you can take advantage of the Inversionista program. This residency visa requires you to invest at least $200,000 in a qualifying business.

These paths don’t give you permanent residency status immediately; you must renew your residency every two years. You can apply to be a permanent resident after three renewals in a row (six years total).

If you retire here, you’ll find plenty of activities to keep you busy. You can enjoy visiting pristine beaches, hiking through jungles, and taking traditional Costa Rican cooking classes. Costa Ricans are friendly and welcoming, and the country is a vibrant mixture of Spanish, Indigenous, Jamaican, and even Chinese cultures.

Ireland

Ireland is ideal if you want to retire in a country with breathtaking beauty and a rich cultural heritage. However, it’s more expensive than some popular destinations; living in Ireland costs almost as much as living in the U.S.

Additionally, Ireland has stringent requirements for getting a visa and becoming a resident. To take advantage of its unique program for retirees, you first need to prove that you have a yearly income of at least €50,000 per person. You also need to have an emergency expense fund of roughly $250,000.

Once you get a visa, you must renew it yearly for five years. After that, you can apply for a five-year visa. You can then apply to be a permanent resident after 10 years has passed.

Healthcare in Ireland is relatively affordable, even if you pay out of pocket. You can also access both public and private health insurance.
