A computer circuit board with a brain on it to represent AI

The emergence and rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has intrigued, excited and alarmed people in equal measure.

Some believe it to be an inevitable evolution of technology that will make life easier for people in all areas of life, others claim it will eventually lead to mass unemployment as it becomes more advanced and begins to replace workers. There’s evidence to suggest both scenarios are credible, but analysis by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) claims there can be a happy medium in the not-too-distant future.

The report points to the strength of global markets and economies and how their standing will relate to the ability to experience, adapt to or suffer from the growth of AI and its inevitable introduction to more labor-intensive workplaces.

Will AI take our jobs?

Almost 40% of global employment is already exposed to AI but, as IMF’s report points out, while previous introductions of new technology to the workplace have seen economies adapt and benefit quickly, AI is a completely different beast because of its ability to impact high-skilled jobs. The report goes on to claim that “as a result, advanced economies face greater risks from AI – but also more opportunities to leverage its benefits – compared with emerging marketing and developing economies.”

It claims around 60% of jobs in advanced economies may be impacted by AI. It’s believed that roughly half of those jobs will benefit from AI integration, while the other half will be at risk of succumbing to AI-powered technology that aims to execute key tasks currently performed by humans. In short, it may replace humans altogether, but only in the most extreme cases so don’t panic.

On the flip side, emerging markets and low-income economies will see their workforce impacted by just 40% and 26% respectively, suggesting there will be fewer immediate interruptions by AI in these areas. However, this is mostly down to these countries not yet having the infrastructure and skilled workforce to take full advantage of AI’s benefits.

How can we stop AI from replacing humans?

IMF’s report stresses the need for countries to act quickly to implement specific policies surrounding the use of AI in specific markets. It has developed an AI Preparedness Index that measures readiness in areas such as digital infrastructure, human capital and labor market policies, innovation and economic integration, regulation and ethics.

This assesses areas such as years of schooling and job-market mobility, as well as the adaptability of digital business models of a country’s legal framework and the presence of strong governance for effective enforcement.

IMF used the index to assess the readiness of 125 countries, with the findings showing that weather economies tend to be better equipped for AI adoption than low-income countries. It’s therefore claimed that stronger economies should embrace and prioritize AI innovation while developing regulatory frameworks, which will help “cultivate a safe and responsible AI environment, helping maintain public trust.”

Pixar, a subsidiary of Disney, is the latest in a long line of firms facing layoffs in 2024, reports TechCrunch. Initial reports suggested that the layoffs could be as much as 20% of Pixar’s workforce, but Pixar has since denied that it will be that many.

The scope of the layoffs and the number of staff who will be affected is being decided based on production schedules and future films that have already been greenlit.

According to insiders, Pixar was required to hire additional staff to bolster its workforce on streaming content for Disney+. As these shows complete production, the studio has more staff than necessary and cuts are inevitable. Disney’s streaming division is yet to turn a profit, despite multiple new Pixar releases being straight-to-streaming.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors during a recent earnings call that Disney+ is expected to become profitable by Q4 2024. Iger put this down to restructuring, which “enabled tremendous efficiencies.”

From cinema to streaming and back to cinema

‘Elemental’, Pixar’s most recent film, was considered to be a box-office flop, bringing in just $29.5 million during its opening weekend. However, it went on to be successful and profitable, making its mark as the most-watched film on Disney+ during the quarter it was released.

Analysts believe that the release of several huge Pixar movies (such as ‘Soul’ and ‘Turning Red’) on Disney+ instead of in cinemas has “trained audiences to expect big, hot Pixar content at home.” Speaking to TechCrunch, Brandon Katz of Parrot Analytics continued, “Retraining the audience to re-embrace the theatrical experience and prioritize that…takes time.”

As well as this consumer habit shift, Katz mentioned the other changes undergoing audience behavior, which include a move away from sequels. In the 2010s, pre-established IPs were popular with audiences, requiring lower effort marking and coming with pre-established buy-in from fans. Now though, franchise fatigue is plaguing audiences.

The race to streaming profitability will be a driving force for companies in 2024, with mergers and buyouts abound. However, a spate of layoffs has plagued the tech industry and does not look to be stopping. It is a tumultuous time as a whole and staff everywhere will be uneasy at the continued job cuts.

Earlier today (Jan.12), the communication platform Discord released plans to lay off 170 staff.

Artificial intelligence gets a lot of media attention, and for good reason. Surveys of CEOs conducted by organizations like Gartner and EY have predicted it to be the most disruptive technology of 2024. This is because an AI-augmented workforce provides increased efficiency and productivity, enhanced data analysis and decision-making, and automation of routine tasks.

For example, imagine an employee’s timesheet being tracked automatically so they can focus on higher-value tasks.

The Pros and Cons of AI

The impact of AI is clearIt streamlines operations by processing vast amounts of data at speeds incomprehensible to humans, reducing downtime, and optimizing workflows. It also enables predictive maintenance in industries with heavy machinery that can fail and cripple operations. And it provides data-driven insights that were previously hidden or too complex to discern.

Of course, there are also challenges, including employee anxiety over displacement and fear of redundancy. Automation through AI and machine learning can make certain jobs obsolete. And, if they aren’t immediately displaced, employees have concerns about its introduction into the workforce.

The Ethical Dilemmas Surrounding AI

Making matters worse, AI systems are trained on data. Biases in this data can be perpetuated or even amplified if not kept in check. This makes transparency and accountability important as developers work to address moral and ethical concerns.

It’s a topic leaders are just now starting to think about. Strong governance is needed to face these obstacles head-on to ensure human and AI integration run smoothly.

The Impact of AI on the Workforce

Although the recent wave of development with large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI has leaders finally understanding the power of these tools, AI development has been around for some time. American Express, for example, employs AI to analyze millions of transactions in real time. It identifies potentially fraudulent activities, saving the company millions and enhancing customer trust.

The most important aspect leaders need to be aware of in an AI integration is their ethical responsibility. It’s tempting to focus on the bottom line and drive efficiency, but leaders have a responsibility to prioritize human beings with a human-centric approach. This requires soft skills like empathy and understanding to create an inclusive company culture built on trust and acceptance.

Taking Bad Actors Into Account

However, with great power comes great responsibility. These AI systems work with large volumes of proprietary data, and developers aren’t always transparent about updates. Bad actors can warp the data (check out this AI poisoning tool from researchers at the University of Chicago), and data breaches at companies like OpenAI and Microsoft’s Wiz expose the problems that could occur.

Because of this, leadership needs to implement a strong human and AI integration plan accounting for potential hazards while focusing on an AI-augmented workforce.

Fostering Human and AI Integration

It’s important for leadership to set the strategic direction of the human and AI integration. They must have a clear understanding of their strategic goals, whether that’s improving efficiency, enhancing customer experience, or driving innovation.

The AI rollout should align with organizational goals and involve all stakeholders to ensure buy-in. Employee involvement is essential, and this means being transparent and communicating priorities and goals to the entire team. Create a forum and foster a dialog among all applicable stakeholders (internally and externally) to address concerns and clearly define expectations. This puts everyone on the same page.

Here are four key steps to rolling out an AI-augmented workforce:

1. Identify AI Integration Opportunities.

The first step is a comprehensive assessment of your organization’s operations. Leaders must identify areas where AI can add significant value, like enhancing customer service, streamlining data analysis, or optimizing supply chain management.

A gap analysis is crucial in this phase, comparing the current state of operations with the desired outcomes to pinpoint specific gaps that AI can effectively address. Estimating the potential return on investment (ROI) for AI initiatives is equally important in determining the prioritization of AI projects; focus on those that offer the most impact and are feasible within the organization’s capabilities and resources.

2. Build AI Competency.

Success in AI integration is heavily dependent on the workforce’s ability to adapt and work alongside these new technologies. Skill mapping is essential to identify the specific skills and knowledge that employees will need in an AI-enhanced workplace. It’s essential to recognize that training needs will vary. Investing in customized training programs that cater to different roles and skill levels within the organization is vital.

Because AI and related technologies are continually evolving, fostering a culture of continuous learning through regular training sessions and refresher courses is crucial to keep staff up-to-date with the latest developments and applications in AI.

3. Create Synergy Between AI and Human Teams.

Building effective hybrid teams that combine AI systems and human employees is critical. These teams should leverage the strengths of both — AI’s capabilities such as data processing and consistency, and human skills like creativity and empathy. Clearly defining roles within these hybrid teams is imperative, ensuring employees understand when to rely on AI and when to apply human judgment.

It is also essential to invest in collaborative tools that enhance the interaction between AI and human teams. These tools, such as intuitive dashboards, alert systems, and communication platforms, can significantly improve productivity and the overall efficacy of AI integration.

4. Continuously Improve Through Engagement.

It is pivotal to implement an open feedback system where employees can share their experiences and suggestions regarding AI tools. Regular meetings, surveys, or suggestion boxes can serve as effective channels for gathering this feedback, ensuring your AI processes are evolving to meet changing needs and remaining user-friendly.

By actively seeking and responding to employee feedback, leaders improve AI systems and empower their employees, making them active contributors to the AI integration process. This approach enhances the effectiveness of AI tools and fosters a sense of ownership and engagement among the workforce.

AI is a powerful technology that can augment human capabilities in the workforce. However, great care must be taken to ensure its implementation is both ethical and efficient. With a strategic approach, leaders can build an AI-augmented workforce that improves the bottom line and everyone’s quality of life.

The post How to Prepare Employees for the Rise of AI Chatbots appeared first on ReadWrite.

]]>

Artificial intelligence and AI-powered chatbots are becoming integral to providing the competitive advantages many companies need. One Intercom survey found that chatbots increased sales in 67% of businesses and saved companies $300,000 a year on average. However, to harness this technology effectively, it’s essential to prioritize training human employees on how to use AI at work.

What does AI training for employees look like? How should companies begin to equip their teams with the skills and knowledge of AI? This article investigates AI training for businesses, particularly on using AI chatbots. It focuses on how organizations can optimize employees’ use of AI in the workplace and align this powerful technology with job roles and responsibilities.

Why Employees Must Evolve to Work Alongside AI-Powered Chatbots

In 2022, Gartner predicted that by 2027, chatbots will be the main customer service channel for about 25% of all businesses. It also found that more than half of survey respondents were already using some form of chatbot or conversational AI in customer-facing applications.

Advances in AI and the release of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools could compound these numbers.

That’s because AI can now automate basic and repetitive tasks, and chatbots can adequately answer simple customer inquiries for most organizations.

With these advances, AI in the workplace will become more commonplace, requiring human employees to evolve their ways of working.

How Roles Will Shift

Here are just a few ways the role of workers will likely shift to maximize the benefits of AI:

  • Customer service roles are shifting focus. Humans will handle more nuanced, sensitive, and complex issues that require empathy and a personal touch beyond AI’s scope.
  • AI oversight is becoming a pivotal task, where humans monitor, train, and refine chatbot interactions to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Human employees are transitioning to roles that require complex decision-making skills while using AI chatbot data to inform strategic business choices.
  • Collaborative roles are emerging. Humans and AI will work in tandem to combine the speed and efficiency of AI with the creativity, problem-solving capabilities, and adaptability of human employees.
  • Continuous AI training for employees will be critical to equip them for their new, more complex roles. AI training for business is essential for leaders to manage this shift and stay ahead of AI trends to integrate new technologies successfully.

Critical Considerations for the Effective Use of Chatbots

As with any digital transformation, embracing new technologies begins with accurately assessing their benefits and aligning features and advantages with business objectives before communicating, implementing, and managing deployment. Technology leaders must seek the answers to the following questions to ensure their teams can use AI in the workplace, especially chatbots:

  • What specific tasks or problems will an AI chatbot solve? How does this align with business objectives?
  • How will a chatbot create value? What is the estimated ROI?
  • Can a chatbot integrate easily with existing systems and workflows?
  • How will AI change the roles of existing employees?
  • What new human responsibilities will be created?
  • What level of customization is available to ensure a chatbot meets the unique needs of the business?
  • What are the privacy and security measures required for data processed by AI?
  • How does a chatbot handle complex queries beyond programmed responses?
  • How is a chatbot’s performance measured? What metrics will there be for effectiveness?
  • Is the chatbot interface user-friendly for employees and end users?
  • Is the business ready for digital transformation? How will this change be managed?

The Risks of Chatbot Implementation

AI-powered chatbot implementation is not without risk. Failure to deploy an appropriately calibrated chatbot with the proper oversight from human employees could result in a loss of credibility, brand reputation, and customers.

AI chatbot deployment must be treated as a strategic implementation rather than a simple technology purchase.

A substantial part of this strategy will be communication followed by robust AI training with employees. It also includes continuous development to move employees to their new responsibilities and ensure future success.

Bridging the Gap: 4 Steps to Align AI and Employee Workflows

How can organizations bridge the gap and provide robust training and support so employees can work alongside AI?

1. Communicate the Change

Many employees are fearful of AI replacing them. The potential of AI to augment customer service roles makes it all the more important to understand and answer employee concerns and effectively communicate a strategic AI adoption.

If employees understand that using AI will make their roles easier and less repetitive and open up opportunities for their development and even progression, human alignment with AI will go more smoothly.

2. Implement Upskilling Programs

Organizations can implement upskilling programs tailored to their workforce’s needs, including online courses, workshops, and hands-on projects involving AI applications relevant to their roles. Employees can be empowered with the skills to combine AI with their roles, work in tandem with AI, and use AI’s data.

3. Leverage Partnerships

AI solution providers will likely offer AI and workforce training. This may include specialized training sessions that help employees calibrate and use tools and platforms. Taking advantage of onboarding programs and ongoing AI training initiatives will ensure competence and confidence.

4. Establish Mentorship Programs and a Continuous Learning Culture

Initiatives such as creating AI ambassadors or technology mentors combined with a continuous learning culture will encourage regular knowledge-sharing and collaborative problem-solving. Employees will be able to learn from AI experts, adapt to integration, and be motivated to achieve more with their new tools.

The Bottom Line: Effective AI Training for Employees Is Essential

To embrace and harness AI, and in this case, AI-powered chatbots, a strategy that begins with answering key questions and communicating the transition before focusing on an ongoing culture of learning and development is vital. Training for employees on AI will help overcome anxieties and introduce workers to their new responsibilities.

AI chatbots will change how employees work — especially in customer service roles — with human agents becoming problem solvers and overseers.

AI can improve customer experiences and offer substantial savings to organizations, but only if human employees are confidently working to optimize these results.

Cybersecurity in private Sector

Cybersecurity is an industry of growing opportunities and one with plenty of job openings. There is a demand for qualified, skilled staff, a solid pipeline of work and top salaries to reward those who enter the sector.

As cyberattacks grow in frequency and seriousness, the need for diligent professionals is acute. From governments to big tech companies, the online world, our data and information need to be protected and that gets to the heart of what cybersecurity is.

Our important infrastructure like water, electricity, transport, and even healthcare rely on the IT systems to allow them to function. As part of this, the networks and data systems must be updated, protected, and supported.

What is cybersecurity?

Essentially, cybersecurity is keeping our online, connected world safe and secure. The “cyber” refers to the internet and “security” is self-explanatory.

Cybersecurity professionals ensure that hackers and others with malicious intent are unable to exploit or compromise your computers and to build a defence, to prevent attacks or to identify weaknesses in the system.

The highest salary cybersecurity roles in the US

In the USA, the average cyber security salary is $119,997 or $57.69 per hour.

According to talent.com, this rate of pay ranges from $155, 250 in West Virginia to $80, 000 in Louisiana.

The ten highest cybersecurity professional salaries, per state are as follows:

West Virginia – $155, 250

Maryland – $145, 463

Wisconsin – $143, 325

Virginia – $142, 922

Massachusetts – $135, 150

Washington – $134, 941

California – $134, 762

Georgia – $132, 667

Hawaii – $132, 500

New Mexico –  $130, 450

Some of the best, highest-paying roles relating to cybersecurity include security engineer, network engineer, security analyst, systems analyst, systems, administrator, and programme analyst.

What are entry-level cybersecurity jobs?

Companies need to nurture new talent, train and retain staff as well as strive to meet the contemporary demand for cybersecurity professionals.

In terms of entry-level cybersecurity jobs, there are different ways to get into the industry depending on your age and current career status.

A formal degree offers a route into cybersecurity but this pipeline of workers is not enough to cover the entire industry meaning there are further opportunities to exploit. Some companies like ThreatX have collaborated with others to provide cybersecurity training, citing a workforce gap of 3.4 million people as part of its initiative.

Additionally, there are introductory courses for re-training or intense boot camp-type environments to get your foot in the door.

You can pursue basic online cybersecurity certificates as a foundation of knowledge and training but this should be backed up further by making contacts, networking, maybe finding a mentor or seeking a side hustle or project in addition to your current main role until a time when you are ready to make the step into a professional cybersecurity job.

  5. Limited Direct Communication: PeoplePerHour encourages communication through their platform, which can be a limitation if you prefer direct communication methods like email or phone calls.

Final words

In conclusion, the world of freelancing offers a tremendous opportunity for individuals to earn money online, allowing them to showcase their talents and expertise to a vast audience. With the rise of online platforms connecting freelancers and clients, the traditional workplace boundaries have blurred, empowering freelancers to work on diverse projects from the comfort of their homes.

After Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions (DS) Division suffered its worst loss to date, the South Korean device giant is intent on addressing employee discipline issues, reports The Korea Times.

The DS Division is in charge of semiconductor production and against a backdrop of a chip industry downturn, recorded a $3.4 billion loss in Q1 2023, equivalent to a year-on-year operating profit reduction of 96%.

And according to leaked internal communications, on November 30th, DS started encouraging its employees to report negligent colleagues to its personal affairs team.

A surveillance state at Samsung?

This latest missive follows a group email in July 2023, which allegedly cautioned employees against committing sexual harassment, neglecting their duties, and abusing privileges.

Reported employee misdemeanors included exaggerating working hours and gaming whilst on duty. While Samsung takes the official line that demands from younger employees about a perceived lack of discipline among seniors catalyzed the new regime, other workers fear it marks a step backwards to a more paranoid and less productive era.

Indeed, The Korea Times reports that one Samsing employee took to Blind (the firm’s internal chat app) to characterize new measures as a return of Oga Jaktong, the Josen Dynasty system which encouraged neighbors to monitor and inform each other between 1392 and the dynasty’s demise in 1910.

Stricter performance assessments are also reportedly in place, alongside the threat of wage freezes and reductions for poor performers, and the conglomerate has just finished an executive reshuffle and organizational restructuring as part of its drive to curb indiscipline.

With the DS Division’s accumulated operating loss totaling $9.1 billion for the first three quarters of 2023, executives worldwide plan to meet imminently to discuss further plans to combat the economic slowdown.

Despite these struggles, Samsung retains its position as an electronics giant, remaining the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, after Apple.

zoom fatigue

In today’s digital age, where videoconferencing has become a staple in both professional and academic settings, a new study sheds light on the phenomenon of videoconferencing fatigue. Conducted by a team of Austrian researchers, the study, published in Scientific Reports, a journal by Nature Reports, delves into the real and measurable effects of prolonged videoconferencing on individuals.

The research team embarked on a unique approach to understanding the impact of videoconferencing on the brain and body. They enlisted 35 university students to participate in an experiment involving a 50-minute lecture. One group attended the lecture via videoconference, while another experienced it live. The students were hooked to an electroencephalogram to measure brain activity and an electrocardiogram to monitor heart rate changes.

The results were telling. Those who attended the live lecture reported feeling more energetic, happier, and active. In contrast, their counterparts in the online group felt more tired, drowsy, and disengaged. The EEG data supported these self-reports, showing increased brain activity indicative of harder cognitive work in the online group, which can lead to fatigue. Similarly, the heart rate data suggested greater fatigue among those attending the lecture online, hinting at a broader impact on the nervous system.

The study’s findings have significant implications for the modern workplace and educational environments. The authors suggest that videoconferencing should be seen as a complement, not a substitute, for face-to-face interactions. However, they acknowledge the study’s limitations, including its academic setting and the younger average age of participants. The study did not compare the stress of videoconferencing with other stressors, such as navigating traffic to attend in-person meetings.

Broader context: The Techno Stress program

According to The Register, this research is part of a larger Austrian initiative called Techno Stress, which examines the adverse effects of increased interaction with information and communication technologies. The program has published 20 papers on topics like metaverse social interactions, digital detox, workplace electronic surveillance, and others.

As the world continues to embrace digital solutions, understanding the impact of technologies like videoconferencing on our well-being is crucial. This study from Austria offers valuable insights into how our brains and bodies react to virtual environments, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to digital and in-person interactions.

Programming has undergone a significant transformation, challenging the traditional notions of what it means to be a programmer. This shift is vividly illustrated in the journey of a professional coder, who, on the cusp of fatherhood, grapples with the rapidly changing role of coding skills in an AI-dominated era, as reported by The New Yorker.

The changing face of programming

The coder, who valued teaching programming to his children like reading and writing, now doubts its future importance. His perspective changed during a hobby project: creating a computer-generated Times-style crossword, once needing much human effort. This project, combining hardware and software, highlighted AI’s growing role in coding.

The introduction of GPT-4 as a coding assistant in the project was a game-changer. Tasks that once took considerable time and expertise were now being accomplished rapidly and efficiently by AI. This shift was not just about automating mundane tasks; it was about AI performing complex programming tasks, suggesting solutions, and even creating functional applications with minimal human intervention.

The coder’s reliance on AI for coding tasks reveals a shift: traditional programming skills are becoming outdated. Reflecting on his journey from a computer enthusiast to a professional coder, he sees how AI tools like GPT-4 are altering the core of his craft, prompting questions about programming’s future.

The future of programming in an AI world

The coder’s story is not just about the evolution of programming; it’s about broader implications of AI in the workforce. As AI continues to advance, it challenges us to rethink the skills and knowledge we value and teach. The future may see a shift from technical prowess in coding to a focus on creativity, problem-solving, and understanding the nuances of human-AI collaboration.

As the coder anticipates the birth of his child, he contemplates what skills to impart in an AI-driven future. Perhaps, instead of specific programming languages, the focus should be on fostering a spirit of curiosity, adaptability, and understanding the interplay between humans and AI. This approach prepares the next generation not just to use technology but to shape it creatively and ethically.

The story of this coder is a microcosm of the broader shift in the technology landscape. AI’s transformation of programming challenges us to adapt our learning and skills for a future blending human creativity with AI. While the role of programmers may change, their innovative and problem-solving spirit will persist.

The dramatic descent of WeWork into bankruptcy stands as a stark lesson in the perils of overzealous investing, particularly under the stewardship of Masayoshi Son, the founder of SoftBank. According to a recent Bloomberg report, this event not only signifies a substantial financial blow but also casts a long shadow over Son’s reputation as a once-celebrated visionary investor.

The high cost of investment hubris

WeWork’s failed IPO revealed its shaky finances and internal issues, leading to a sharp drop in valuation from $47 billion. SoftBank faced a loss of $11.5 billion in equity and $2.2 billion in debt. Son’s Vision Fund also reported a record $32 billion loss, challenging his investment approach.

The vision fund’s uncertain future

Son’s instinct-driven investment style has faced criticism for inflating startup values and ignoring warning signs. The Vision Fund, backed by Middle Eastern wealth funds, sought to create unicorns but contributed to a valuation bubble. Now, SoftBank is being more cautious, emphasizing due diligence. Yet, questions remain about Son’s ability to change his investment style, given his control over SoftBank.

WeWork’s collapse highlights the dangers of aggressive investing and is a warning for venture capitalists. The industry watches to see if Son can adjust his methods to avoid future issues.

Palo Alto Networks Acquires Israel Talon Cyber

Palo Alto Networks has acquired Israel-based cybersecurity startup Talon Cyber Security for $625 million, the company confirmed Monday.

The deal is Palo Alto’s second major cybersecurity acquisition in Israel in the past week. On Tuesday, the Santa Clara, California-based company announced it is acquiring cloud data security firm Dig Security for around $400 million.

Talon, co-founded in 2019 by Ofer Ben-Noon and Ohad Bobrov, had raised about $143 million from investors, including Team8, Entrée Capital, Evolution Equity, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Cyverse Capital. According to sources, Talon was approached by Palo Alto and was not seeking to be acquired.

The acquisitions come as Israel’s tech industry has been heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza militants that began last month. With tech accounting for 18% of Israel’s GDP, many tech workers have been called up for military reserve duty or are volunteering, pausing much of the country’s tech work.

The Palo Alto investors say cybersecurity remains a growth area despite Israel’s conflict.

“The need for cybersecurity hasn’t decreased given what is happening — actually, it’s the other way around. With the advancement of new systems and geopolitical changes, there are even more needs for cybersecurity,” said Lior Simon, general partner at Cyberstarts, an Israel-based cyber investor.

Talon has developed an “enterprise browser” platform to secure remote workforces by controlling access to apps and websites. The platform provides visibility into all work-related online activity on employees’ personal and company devices.

“The average enterprise uses hundreds of SaaS and web applications, meaning that most work is now done primarily via the browser,” said Lee Klarich, chief product officer at Palo Alto Networks. “Talon enables organizations to secure all work activity via an Enterprise Browser, without touching the personal usage of the device or impacting user privacy.”

The Talon platform will integrate with Palo Alto’s Prisma SASE cloud security service.

The Talon platform will integrate with Palo Alto’s Prisma SASE cloud security service. SASE (secure access service edge) provides cloud-based network security for remote users.

Anand Oswal, senior vice president and general manager of Palo Alto’s Firewall as a Platform business, said the combination of Prisma SASE and Talon “will transform how organizations navigate the challenges of today’s modern and connected digital environments.”

YouTube war on ad blocking

YouTube’s new aggressive tactics to disable ad blockers has led to a wave of ad blocker uninstallations, according to data from ad blocker companies.

The video platform, owned by Google, escalated efforts last month to crackdown on the popular add-ons used by millions to skip ads. It now uses repeated pop-up messages demanding viewers turn off ad blockers or lose access.

According to a Nov. 3 Wired report, previously unreported statistics show the campaign is working. Ad blocking tools Ghostery and AdGuard experienced multi-fold surges in daily uninstallations throughout October.

Ghostery tallied three to five times its typical daily uninstalls during the crackdown. Over 90% of users cited YouTube as the reason in a survey.

The Cyprus-based AdGuard saw uninstallations spike from 6,000 a day to as much as 52,000 daily. Its complaints flooded in at a rate of 4 per hour

“Where the issues come is when they feel the line is overstepped,” said Matthew Maier of ad blocker company Eyeo, which declined to share usage data. YouTube relies heavily on ads, but many users install blockers to eliminate disruptions, data harvesting, and security risks.

Despite the uninstallations, many sought alternatives after their ad blockers stopped working on YouTube. AdGuard and Ghostery both saw large numbers of new installs as people looked for fixes.

Some disgruntled users are recommending open-source sites like Newpipe that can play YouTube videos ad-free using workarounds. But Google seems intent on pressing ahead. “This game will continue,” said Andrey Meshkov of AdGuard.

Yet constantly updated ad-blocking code and alternatives suggest the uninstall wave may be temporary. “I could hardly see them being ready to do any ads that can be deemed acceptable,” Meshkov said.

A new open-source application called FreeChat is making it easier than ever for regular people to experiment with powerful AI chatbots on their Macs.

Announced in an Oct. 30 Reddit post, FreeChat lets Mac users chat with large language models without any technical know-how required. Large language models are AIs trained on massive amounts of text data to generate human-like conversations.

Until now, accessing such AIs required installing complex software or uploading private conversations to the cloud. But FreeChat runs entirely offline on your local machine, with no internet needed after installation.

As clearly explained in the documentation, the app was built using the open-source llama.cpp library, which allows developers to run models based on Meta’s Llama and Llama 2 on home computers. With FreeChat, users can simply download the app from the Mac App Store and start chatting no configuration necessary.

Conversations occur within the app itself and are saved locally, giving users privacy and control over their data

The default model provides general-purpose chat, but users can easily customize it or swap in other freely available models to change their persona and skills. There are models optimized for uncensored chat, programming advice, counseling conversations, and more.

The developer’s goal is to expand access to AI. As they explained on Github, “The main goal of FreeChat is to make open, local, private models accessible to more people.” By removing the barriers to entry, the developer hopes to let non-technical users experiment safely with this emerging technology.

The launch on the Mac App Store this weekend represents a significant milestone. It brings local AI out of the realm of hackers and early adopters into a polished, consumer-friendly package anyone can install. With interactive AI poised to become mainstream in applications like search and chat, tools like FreeChat give regular people a chance to try it out without surrendering their data over to corporations or learning to use a terminal.

UK's global AI safety body

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s ambitions to establish a new global AI research body appear to have been dealt a setback, according to a draft communiqué obtained by POLITICO before next week’s flagship AI Safety Summit.

According to an Oct. 26 Politico report, the document — dated October 25 and presented to EU member states — acknowledges the potential for “serious, even catastrophic” harm from advanced AI systems. However, it signals that further study could be carried out through existing multilateral efforts like the United Nations and the Global Partnership on AI rather than a separate entity.

This represents a change from an earlier draft, which only referenced the network “supporting” collaboration and did not mention the UN. The UN announced its own high-level advisory body on AI in August, due to report back in 2024.

Holding future AI safety summits seems to still be in question

The latest version of the Politico report also references holding future AI safety summits in square brackets, suggesting a lack of agreement among participating nations. Earlier this week, UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said she hoped the November 1-2 summit would be the “first of many.”

Other tweaks appear geared towards aligning with positions held by China and the EU. Mentions of UNESCO and the G20 have been removed, while language around risk-based governance frameworks has been added.

An EU official stated these edits reflect a desire to adhere closely to the bloc’s AI Act legislation. The Act takes a proportionate, risk-based approach to regulating AI based on risk categories.

The changes are a potential setback for the UK’s ambitions to spearhead global coordination on AI safety via a dedicated research body. However, a UK source disputed this interpretation, claiming the new wording supported their goals.

We watch for the final tally, which will be out next week. We look forward to reporting the results here.

The final verdict will become evident when the summit communiqué is published next week. However, the revised draft suggests an uphill battle for the UK in achieving international consensus on addressing potential risks from advanced AI.

Qualcomm bets big on AI

At an event on Tuesday, Qualcomm is poised to announce its next flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and leaked details reveal major upgrades focused on artificial intelligence capabilities.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip will likely power leading Android smartphones in 2024, starting with Samsung’s Galaxy S24 line expected in Q1. While Qualcomm’s chips are in most high-end Androids, Google relies on its own Tensor processors for Pixel phones. This puts pressure on Google to keep pace with Qualcomm’s AI developments, as a key advantage of developing its own chip is the ability to customize for AI.

According to marketing materials leaked to MSPoweruser, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will enable advanced AI-powered camera features like object removal in videos, expanding parts of photos, and generating synthetic backgrounds. Object removal uses segmentation algorithms to identify and erase objects from video footage. Expanding parts of photos digitally zooms in on image areas while preserving detail through generative modeling. Synthetic backgrounds completely replace backgrounds using generative adversarial networks.

Supposedly 98% faster than its predecessor!

The upgraded Hexagon neural processing unit is supposedly 98% faster than its predecessor, allowing the chip to run popular AI models like Stable Diffusion quickly and efficiently. Stable Diffusion uses text-to-image diffusion models to generate realistic images. Faster AI execution expands the possibilities for on-device intelligence.

This focus on AI represents a strategic shift for Qualcomm after the breakthroughs in generative AI last year. Generative adversarial networks, diffusion models, and transformers led to exponential progress in AI-synthesized content. The company previously demonstrated the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip running Stable Diffusion in February, but the Gen 3 makes AI execution and new use cases an explicit priority.

Beyond AI, the Gen 3 delivers sizable upgrades across the board. Qualcomm claims the chip has a 30% faster CPU, 25% faster GPU, support for 240fps gaming, enhanced ray tracing, and advanced night vision video. It also boasts 5G Advanced compatibility for improving real-world speeds. These specs target performance, graphics, and connectivity — key areas for mobile power users.

Apple's next homepod smart speaker

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Apple was developing a new version of its HomePod smart speaker — but this time with a built-in display. Now, leaked images have emerged that seem to confirm those rumors and provide the first glimpse of what Apple may be planning.

The leaked photo, originally posted on Twitter by a user named Kosutami, who has a proven track record of Apple leaks according to MacRumors, shows a HomePod with a significantly larger display on top compared to the current model’s small LED panel. While the size is difficult to precisely gauge from the lone image, previous rumors suggested it could be around 7 inches diagonally. It looks to have an LCD display on the top, which is a liquid-crystal display or some other electronically modulated optical device.

This display appears distinctly different than the LED matrix used on the original HomePod. The larger size and widescreen orientation suggest it is likely a full touchscreen display, unlike the non-interactive LED panel. This opens up many more possibilities for visually displaying information and touch controls.

So, what exactly will Apple use this new interactive display for?

According to reports, the main purpose is to display notifications from your iPhone using widgets, similar to the Apple Watch. This would provide quick glimpses of information like calendar events, weather, stock prices, and more.

It will also likely showcase album art and other graphics when using apps like Apple Music and Podcasts. However, the landscape orientation seems less than ideal unless you’re standing right in front of the speaker. This could limit its usefulness as a visual overview from across the room.

Notably, this doesn’t look like the rumored combination HomePod/Apple TV device some analysts have speculated about. Beyond just adding a display, many users likely hope Apple also improves other pain points like Siri’s reliability and speed, AirPlay streaming performance, and buggy multi-room audio support.

The company’s famous “it just works” reputation doesn’t always apply to its smart home products currently. Software and performance improvements will be just as important.

So, in the end, will a display make the HomePod substantially more useful? It’s hard to say definitively without hands-on testing, but it seems doubtful a modest display will be a game-changer. The real test will be whether Apple delivers a significantly upgraded overall experience when it likely unveils the new model later this year. For now, leaked images provide the best sneak peek at what may be in store.

Twitter, now known as X, is rolling out a new $1 per year “Not A Bot” subscription program to reduce spam and bot accounts. The program is initially launching in New Zealand and the Philippines for new users who sign up via the website.

The Fee and Its Purpose

The $1 annual fee is intended to “bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform, and bot activity,” according to an announcement from X. Requiring new users to pay even a small fee creates an increased barrier for bot creators attempting to establish networks of fake accounts quickly.

New web users in the two countries must provide a phone number to verify their account and pay the $1 subscription. Without it, they can only view content in a “read-only” mode. The program does not yet apply to new users signing up via mobile apps, though X’s terms and conditions indicate it may expand there soon.

The focus on new web-based users makes sense, given that quickly automating account creation through websites is easier than mobile apps. Focusing on two small countries first allows X to test out the system before expanding globally.

The new $1 anti-bot subscription is separate from X’s existing $8 per month

The new $1 anti-bot subscription is separate from X’s existing $8 per month subscription offering, known as Twitter Blue. The $8 subscription provides users with enhanced features like edit tweets, 1080p video uploads, and reader mode.

Only a tiny fraction of users are estimated to pay for Twitter Blue. However, even that small revenue stream is likely welcome for X as it seeks to increase monetization while cutting costs under its new owner Elon Musk.

The reasons for launching the program specifically in New Zealand and the Philippines are unclear. However, focusing on regions that have seen more bot activity could help X determine if the fee successfully reduces spam accounts originating from those areas.

The relatively small size of these countries also provides a contained environment for X to evaluate the system and iron out any issues before expanding to larger markets. If successful, the $1 anti-bot fee could eventually reach Twitter users in many other countries.

Canon Semiconductor manufacturing

Today, Canon made waves in the semiconductor world by announcing its new nanoimprint lithography systems for chip production. The company is positioning the technology as an alternative to the costly and complex extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) systems currently dominated by Dutch firm ASML Holding NV.

According to an Oct. 13 Canon announcement, the firm’s nanoimprint machines can produce 5nm chip circuits, matching the cutting-edge level of EUV. The company predicts enhancements to imprint materials and overlay alignment could improve resolution to 2nm, placing Canon decisively into next-generation manufacturing. This is a significant leap for the Japanese tech giant after lagging behind in the EUV race.

Unlike EUV’s sophisticated use of high-powered lasers, nanoimprinting imprints nanoscale circuit patterns directly onto silicon wafers using a mold-like stamp. Canon believes this simpler mechanical imprinting process will provide a cheaper and more accessible option for chipmakers.

Furthermore, according to Bloomberg the technology’s novelty may allow it to bypass current US export restrictions on EUV systems to China. A Canon spokesperson would not confirm whether the nanoimprint systems would be restricted to Bloomberg.

Nanoimprinting has long been touted as an alternative lithography solution despite past challenges with defects

But after acquiring nanoimprint pioneer Molecular Imprints Inc. in 2014, Canon has dedicated nearly a decade to developing the technology and solving these issues. With the commercial launch, Canon must now prove its nanoimprint systems can enable reliable high-volume manufacturing.

Canon’s rival Nikon Corp. has also struggled to keep pace as ASML dominates the lithography market. ASML has seen tremendous demand with five straight quarters of rising revenues and anticipates 30% net sales growth this year as chipmakers adopt EUV. Canon’s stock has also rallied 26% this year amid broader market gains.

The launch represents Canon’s first foray into cutting-edge lithography systems after years focused on less advanced equipment. This is underscored by the construction of its new semiconductor equipment plant in Utsunomiya to produce the nanoimprint systems. If successfully adopted, the technology could truly shake up an industry firmly entrenched in EUV and end ASML’s monopoly.
